Kenya's PISA Results Are Worse Than the Ranking
Kenya has finally received its report card from the international classroom.
And honestly, “please see me after class” might be the kindest response.
Kenyan 15-year-olds scored 326 in mathematics, 335 in science and 320 in reading, compared with OECD averages of 463, 482 and 461 respectively.
But the averages aren't even the most disturbing part.
Only 9% of Kenyan students reached Level 2 or higher in mathematics. 16% reached it in science, and just 11% reached it in reading.
📉 The Numbers Are Brutal
So roughly 9 out of 10 Kenyan students didn't reach the basic PISA mathematics benchmark.
At this point, saying “our education system needs improvement” is almost comedy.
We're way past the point where another education summit, another policy document, or another government announcement should make us feel like we're doing something.
9% reached basic mathematics proficiency.
Read that again.
💰 And Then There Is the Wealth Question
Then comes the statistic that should really make us uncomfortable.
Kenyan students from high socioeconomic backgrounds scored only 8 points higher in science than students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
The OECD average gap was 85 points.
Kenya: 8 points
OECD: 85 points
That is not a minor difference in the data.
It is a completely different pattern.
If poverty alone explained Kenya's education crisis, you'd expect wealthy Kenyan students to be dramatically ahead of poorer Kenyan students.
They aren't.
And this doesn't mean poverty doesn't matter.
It means the socioeconomic differences measured by PISA aren't explaining the scale of Kenya's problem.
So maybe we're asking the wrong questions.
🧠 Maybe Education Starts Earlier Than We Think
We spend an enormous amount of time arguing about CBC, teachers, exams, school fees, textbooks and government policy.
All of those things matter.
But perhaps we're looking too late.
Education doesn't begin when a child enters Standard One.
By then, the brain has already spent years developing through nutrition, health, language, interaction, play, stress, sleep and the child's broader environment.
A child doesn't suddenly become a learner when they put on a school uniform.
The learning process started years earlier.
And this is where the conversation gets uncomfortable.
🧬 What About Genetics?
Research on achievement gaps in the United States has found that differences in academic performance can appear before children even enter kindergarten.
Researchers have also found that family environment, socioeconomic conditions and early childhood experiences matter enormously.
That doesn't mean genetics don't matter.
They do.
Cognitive traits are partly influenced by genetics. But “heritable” does not mean “fixed,” and it certainly doesn't prove that differences between populations are genetic.
That distinction matters.
Because there is a very dangerous intellectual shortcut that goes:
Different results → different abilities → different genetics.
That's not how the evidence works.
🇺🇸 The Black-White Achievement Gap Is a Useful Warning
The Black-White achievement-gap research in the United States is actually a useful warning against simplistic explanations.
The gap changed over time and narrowed considerably in some periods, while researchers found substantial evidence pointing toward environmental and developmental factors.
That doesn't mean race itself is irrelevant to the social conditions children experience.
It means we should be extremely careful before turning differences in test scores into claims about innate ability.
There is a huge difference between saying:
“These groups currently perform differently on this measure.”
and saying:
“These groups are inherently different in intelligence.”
The first is an empirical observation.
The second requires a completely different level of evidence.
👶 So What If We're Looking at the Wrong Age?
So what if we're making the same mistake in Kenya?
What if we keep asking why a 15-year-old can't solve a mathematics problem when we should be asking what happened during the first five years of that child's life?
What did they eat?
How healthy were they?
How much were they spoken to?
Were they exposed to books?
Were they encouraged to ask questions?
Did adults explain things to them or simply tell them to “shut up”?
Did they learn to reason, or mainly to memorise?
These aren't small questions.
They are questions about the foundations upon which the entire education system is built.
🏫 Eventually, They Walk Into a Classroom
And what happens when millions of children experience weaknesses in these areas?
Eventually, they walk into a classroom.
Then we blame the teacher.
Then we blame CBC.
Then we blame exams.
Then we blame the government.
Blaming “the government” is practically a national hobby.
But PISA is giving us a reason to look beyond the classroom.
Because almost no Kenyan students reached the highest proficiency levels in mathematics and science, compared with 8% in mathematics and 7% in science across the OECD.
We therefore don't just have a problem at the bottom.
We barely have a top.
And that should worry us just as much.
🚨 The Most Dangerous Conclusion
The lazy conclusion is that Kenyan children are somehow less capable.
That's also probably the most intellectually bankrupt conclusion we could draw.
PISA tells us what happened.
It doesn't tell us that Kenyan children are inherently incapable of doing better.
Those are two very different statements.
The more interesting question is:
What are we doing — from pregnancy, through early childhood and into school — that is producing these outcomes?
That is the question worth investigating.
Not just “Which curriculum should we use?”
Not just “Are teachers good enough?”
Not just “Why aren't students studying harder?”
But what is happening throughout the entire developmental pipeline?
🔬 This Is Bigger Than an Education Problem
Because when only 9% of 15-year-olds demonstrate basic mathematics proficiency, we're no longer talking about a few bad schools.
We're talking about a systemic developmental problem.
And perhaps the biggest mistake we've made is assuming that education starts at school.
<u>It doesn't.</u>
School is where the consequences become visible.
The examination is merely where the bill arrives.
And judging by these numbers...
